The Pear with a Secret: Pear-Shaped Hidden Halo Lab-Grown Diamond Engagement Rings (2026)
From the top, it looks like a clean solitaire.
From the side, it's a completely different ring.
That's the whole point of a hidden halo. And on a pear-shaped diamond, it works better than on any other cut.
The teardrop silhouette already does more for the finger than a round or oval. The hidden halo then tucks a full ring of pave diamonds underneath the stone, invisible from directly above but fully visible the moment the ring catches light at an angle. You get the minimal look and the maximum sparkle, in the same ring, at the same time.
This guide covers the pear shape, the hidden halo, what to check before you buy, which True Diamond rings to consider, and verified pricing. If you're in the middle of deciding, this is what you need to read.
The Niara 1.3 Ct Pear Hidden Halo Solitaire Ring. From the top, a solitaire. From the side, something else entirely.
Why Pear? Why Hidden Halo?
Ask someone why they want a pear-shaped ring and they usually say the same thing: it elongates the finger. That's true. The teardrop silhouette creates a visual line that stretches upward toward the nail in a way that round, princess, or cushion cuts simply don't. It's the most flattering cut for the hand.
But there's something nobody mentions: the pear has personality. It's not the obvious choice. It's not the safe choice. It's the choice that says the person wearing it actually thought about it.
So why hidden halo?
A pear solitaire is beautiful. But it can feel like it's waiting for something. The hidden halo is that something.
Instead of placing accent diamonds visibly around the stone like a classic halo, the hidden halo tucks them underneath, in a recessed groove below the centre stone. From above: solitaire. Tilt the ring even slightly toward the light and a full ring of diamonds appears around the base of the stone, tracing the entire pear outline underneath.
The effect is genuinely surprising. Every time the ring catches light at a new angle, it looks different. That's rare in a piece of jewellery.
The Hidden Halo, Explained Properly
Most people have seen the phrase "hidden halo" but aren't entirely sure what it means. Here it is without the marketing language.
A classic halo sits around the centre stone, visible from every angle. A hidden halo sits below the centre stone, in a recessed channel that's part of the setting. When you look directly down at the ring, you see only the pear. When the ring rotates or tilts in light, the hidden row of pave diamonds catches it and creates a halo effect around the base of the stone.
On a pear, this matters more than on a round diamond. The pear's outline is directional. The hidden halo follows that teardrop shape underneath, coming to a point at the tip. The result is that the centre stone appears lifted, larger, and more brilliant than a solitaire of the same carat weight.
Same ring. Left: top view, a clean pear solitaire. Right: angled, the hidden halo lights up around the full base of the stone.
Which Direction Does the Point Face?
This is genuinely the most asked question about pear rings. The answer is that there is no rule. It comes down to what looks right on the wearer's hand.
Point toward the fingertip is the traditional and most common orientation. The tip extends upward toward the nail, which creates the maximum elongating effect. This is how the Niara ring is set. Works well on narrower fingers where the visual stretch is most visible.
Point toward the wrist gives a softer look. The rounder end faces the nail, the tip points inward. The ring reads as a teardrop from the front rather than a geometric point. Some people find this more romantic, less angular.
East-west is the most unconventional: the pear sits horizontally across the finger rather than along its length. Bold, architectural, very different from standard. Suits buyers who want something that makes people look twice.
| Orientation | Visual Effect | Works Best With |
|---|---|---|
| Point up (toward nail) | Maximum elongation. Classic teardrop silhouette. | Hidden halo, solitaire, cathedral settings |
| Point down (toward wrist) | Softer, rounder from the front. More romantic feel. | Solitaire, pave band |
| East-west (horizontal) | Architectural. Reads like a wide oval from the front. | Bezel, tension, east-west prong settings |
What to Check Before You Buy a Pear Diamond
Pear diamonds have different buying priorities than rounds. The certificate tells you some of it. The rest you have to see.
Symmetry matters most
IGI doesn't issue an overall Cut grade for pear shapes. What it grades is Symmetry and Polish, and on a pear, Symmetry is the one that counts. Look for Excellent or Very Good. An asymmetrical pear, where one shoulder sits higher than the other or the tip is off-centre, is visible on the hand from across a room. Always view the stone from directly above in a photo or video before confirming.
Go higher on colour than you'd expect
Pear diamonds concentrate colour at the tip. A lower colour grade that looks fine on a round can show visible warmth at the point of a pear, especially in white gold or platinum. EF is the safe choice. In yellow gold or rose gold you can go to F or G since the metal's warmth balances the stone's warmth at the tip. True Diamond's pear collection defaults to EF.
Length-to-width ratio: 1.45 to 1.75
Below 1.40 and the stone looks stubby, almost like a fat oval. Above 1.80 and the tip becomes very fine and the stone looks too elongated. The 1.45 to 1.75 range is where most pears look their best. This is listed on the IGI certificate under Measurements.
The bow-tie effect
Like ovals, pear diamonds can show a bow-tie: a dark shadow in the upper, rounded portion of the stone caused by light passing through instead of reflecting back. A mild bow-tie on a pear is normal. A severe one dulls the rounded half visibly. A still photograph can hide this completely. A rotating video in natural light will show it within seconds.
The pear elongates the finger more than any other brilliant cut. The hidden halo adds brilliance without changing the clean look from above.
The Niara 1.3 Ct Pear Hidden Halo Solitaire Ring
This is the ring that prompted this guide.
The Niara uses a 1.3-carat IGI-certified pear-cut lab-grown diamond, EF colour, VVS clarity, set in a micro-pave hidden halo in 18K gold. The halo traces the full teardrop outline underneath the stone, which means from every angle except directly above, the ring is doing something unexpected.
It photographs well. It looks better in person. That's the nature of a hidden halo , the still image only shows you one side of it.

Which Gold Works Best on a Pear Ring?
All True Diamond rings are 18K gold, 75% pure gold. Within 18K, the metal choice matters more on a pear than on most shapes, because the tip of the stone draws the eye directly toward the band. The colour relationship between stone and metal is immediately visible.
Same IGI-certified diamond. Three very different rings depending on the gold.
18K Rose Gold is the most flattering on Indian skin tones and the most natural pairing for the teardrop shape. The warmth of the band creates contrast against a white pear diamond without competing with it.
18K White Gold gives the crispest look. The tip of the pear against white gold creates a sharp, clean contrast that shows the cut's geometry most clearly. Right choice if the wearer prefers cooler, silver-toned jewellery. Needs replating every two to three years to keep the bright finish.
18K Yellow Gold is having a genuine resurgence. On a pear, yellow gold lets you drop one colour grade, from EF to FG, without any visible difference, since the metal's warmth balances the stone's warmth at the tip. Classic, durable, no replating needed.
